Rotor bar manufacturer, Alberta, Canada
Industry: Oil & Gas
Application: Rotor Bar
Location: Alberta, Canada
Problem
A large manufacturer of pumps and drills was using turned, ground and polished 4140 alloy bar for use in rotor bars. Their problem was the number of surface issues they faced because the materials were not maintaining straightness through processing. Because of the intricate nature of rotor bars, surface properties are very important, as well as the need to maintain very tight tolerances. The post-processing costs for the customer continued to rise, and they couldn’t bear any more expenses.
Solution
In working closely with the customer, Castle Metals found that the process previously utilized was adding unnecessary costs in materials. Castle presented two products for the customer to test – Turned, ground and polished bar and turned and polished bar. Because both stress free products maintained the tight tolerances required by the customer, the additional grinding process was no longer necessary.
Result
By selecting Castle Metals as the distributor for 4140 alloy bar, the customer saw a significant cost savings because they removed what is now considered an unnecessary process. Using a stress free product reduces the total machine time and cost because straightness is now consistently maintained, saving the customer thousands of dollars per year. This customer also takes advantage of Castle Metals’ stocking program, meaning Castle houses all of their material and delivers to the shop on an as-needed basis. This benefit leaves more space available on the production floor which also reduces the customer’s overall cost of possession.
